Life Membership Process
Life Membership is the highest award available to recognise the exceptional contribution of individuals to the game in the Southern Football Federation. It is therefore only to be awarded in exceptional circumstances.
In considering the award of Life Membership an individual should have demonstrated significant and sustained service enhancing the quality of the game in the Federation and leaving a noteworthy legacy.
CRITERIA FOR LIFE MEMBERSHIP
Any member of Southern Football may be eligible for Life Membership based on the following criteria:
- President, five (5) years’ service
- Secretary and Treasurer seven (7) years’ service
- Other persons on committees ten (10) years’ service; and
- Other persons giving outstanding service to a club or the Federation for 12 years or more.
The points to be considered for any nomination should include the general attitude and overall demeanour of the nominee to ensure that the attitude is one that has consistently reflected:
- A dedication to the strategy and values of Southern Football
- A willingness to drive change in the game, through the right channels and in a way that demonstrates integrity
- Commitment to the principals of good sportsmanship
- Valued leadership and good role modelling that reflects positively upon the game
- A willingness to fight for fairness, equality and equity throughout the game
- These points apply in whatever role the nominee has participated in during their service to the Federation or a member Club. Achieving minimum service levels does not automatically guarantee the award of Life Membership.
PROCESS FOR ASSESSING APPLICATIONS FOR LIFE MEMBERSHIP
- Nominations for Life Membership will be considered at the next Southern Football Annual General Meeting (AGM), which are announced in accordance with our constitution and normally take place in May each year.
- Life Members shall be elected on (and may be removed by) the majority vote of those present and entitled to vote at an AGM.
- The board may interview the nominator, seconder and referees as to the suitability of the nominees.
- Under special circumstances a Life Membership may be considered outside of an AGM at the discretion of the Board of Southern Football
- Any application which is not successful in obtaining the Board’s approval shall be treated by the Board of Management in the strictest confidence.
- Any Member may propose another Member as a Life Member and must forward a brief account of the candidate’s service and/or contribution to the Board or CEO not later than forty (40) days (or such later date as the Board may allow) before the date for holding the AGM at which the nomination is to be considered. This shall then be forwarded to all members of the Board for their consideration. The Board may, in its absolute discretion, decide whether or not to recommend the election to the AGM. If recommended, the nomination should be forwarded to Clubs no later than twenty-eight (28) days prior to the AGM (or such later date as the Board may allow).
- Unsuccessful nominations may be resubmitted to the board for their consideration again after a period of two years.
BENEFITS OF LIFE MEMBERSHIP
In addition to the status of membership of a select group within the Federation, Life Membership will be recognized by:
- Award of the Life Membership at the Annual General meeting
- Listing in the Annual Report and on the Southern Football website
- A story through media of the Life Member’s achievements and contributions to the game
- Invitation to all Federation functions
- Invitation to a twice-annual meeting with the CEO (along with some staff and board members) to update on Southern Football’s progress and strategy, and to allow open Q&A
RETRACTION
Retraction of a Life Membership Award may occur where the recipient has conducted him/herself in a manner that reflects directly and adversely on the image or activities of the Federation. This provision will only be exercised in exceptional circumstances and will require the full support of Southern Football Board to be enacted. As part of the deliberations, the Life Member in question is also to be given an opportunity to present their case for retention of their Life Membership status.
